Gather round, children, as I regale you with the Legend of El Dwarfo: The Bravest of the Bunnies…
In other words, I (Sarah) will reveal how Theodore got the nickname “El Dwarfo.”
It goes back as far as when I first saw Theodore at the pet store. Technically he wasn’t even “Theodore” yet. He was just a nameless fluff of a baby bunny. But he stood out to me in a very special way: when I reached down to pet him he didn’t run away. In fact, after several pets, he started licking my hand! Then and there, I knew he was the bunny for me: he was definitely sociable and definitely liked me.
Now, when I first brought Theodore home, I wasn’t fully sure of what to expect. Beforehand, Matt and I had done our research about owning a pet rabbit. Though that research proved to be invaluable, we couldn’t help but notice that not everything we read applied to Theodore:
“Don’t expect your new bunny to binky right away. He’ll need some time to get used to you and his new surroundings.”
Definitely not the case for Theodore. When we first let him run around the day we brought him home, he was binkying around the room within minutes. Minutes. You’ve never seen such a happy bun!
“Rabbits like to stay low to the ground and do not like high places.”
Just look at this video:
Theodore loves to jump and climb. And once he gets up high, he usually looks for a way to go higher. This is a bunny who is not satisfied with just anything. He’s an explorer. He doesn’t get scared quite like other bunnies. He is….El Dwarfo!
The nickname was given to him shortly after we brought him home. Matt came up with the alter ego or a bunny with a black mask and cape. “The bravest of all the bunnies” we called him. Do you know what happened next? Theodore’s fur started getting darker in different places on his body. Ironically, and not making this up, it grew into a pattern as a cape on his back and a mask on his face. The cape looked similar to a Batman cape with the curves on the end. The mask looked very Zorro like. It was hilarious and the nickname stuck.
Unfortunately, we never took any pictures of this. His hair is still dark on his back and face now, but it is a much more even colored coat. However, this did not stop Matt from having a little fun with photoshop.
